Everybody knows to warm the liner in the sun. Almost nobody knows there is an upper limit.
Liner suppliers put the window at no less than seventy degrees and preferably no hotter than eighty-five. Too cold and the vinyl is stiff, manufacturing folds stay visible, and it will not lay against the wall. Too hot and it relaxes and stretches too much, so you produce slack as you work and spend the afternoon taking it back out again.
A component with a working temperature, and a job people misunderstand
A pool liner is the only part of an above-ground pool whose installation is governed by the weather rather than by the schedule. Anybody who has fitted one knows to unfold it in the sun first, and that instruction is universal enough that it feels like the whole story. It is half of it. Liner guidance puts the window at no less than seventy degrees Fahrenheit and preferably no hotter than eighty-five, with both the sunlight and the air temperature helping the vinyl relax.
Both ends of that window have named consequences. Too cold and the liner is stiffer and harder to work into position, manufacturing folds remain visible, and it will not lay properly against the wall. Too hot and the vinyl relaxes and stretches too much. Those failures look nothing alike and neither is a defect in the liner. So a July afternoon in a hot climate is as wrong as an April morning in a cold one, and the mid-eighties is a ceiling rather than an ideal.
The hot-day failure is worth picturing because it wastes a day rather than a liner. Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature, so on a hot day pulling as you work around the pool leaves you with too much liner, which then has to be worked back around and loosened. Come up short instead and you go back around pulling some of the top with you. Either way you are chasing a material that is changing dimension while you handle it.
Underneath all of that sits a misunderstanding that explains every other rule in liner installation. An installation guide states it plainly: the liner is not a structural part of the pool. Its purpose is to form a water seal, water pressure is held by the wall and frame rather than by the liner, and a properly installed liner must be supported by the ground, the cove and the pool wall. An improperly installed one will not support the weight of the water, resulting in a blowout that the warranty does not cover. A liner is a bag that has to be fully supported at every point, and anywhere it is not, it is carrying load it was never designed for.
What it actually takes

The whole job has one deadline and water enforces it. Everything you want to fix has to be fixed before there is enough weight in the pool to hold the liner where it is.
What to get right, specifically
Seventy to eighty-five, and the ceiling is real
Liner guidance specifies a sunny day at no less than seventy degrees and preferably no hotter than eighty-five, with both the sun and the air temperature helping the vinyl relax. The cold failure is well known: a stiffer liner that is harder to position, with manufacturing folds still visible and vinyl that will not lay properly against the wall. The hot failure is not: the vinyl relaxes and stretches too much. In practice that means you pull as you work around the pool, the liner grows, and you finish with slack you have to go back and remove, or you come up short and end up pulling the top over further to make up the perimeter. Neither is a fault in the liner. If the day is outside the window, the right answer is a different day.
The liner is not structural, and that explains everything else
Worth understanding because it converts a list of rules into one principle. An installation guide states it directly: the liner is not a structural part of the pool, its purpose is to form a water seal, water pressure is held by the pool wall and frame rather than by the liner, and a properly installed liner must be supported by the ground, the cove and the pool wall. An improperly installed liner will not support the weight of the water, resulting in a blowout, and that is not covered by warranty. So the liner is a bag that needs continuous support. Every other rule here, the cove, the smooth base, the prohibition on overstretching, exists to make sure it has that support at every point rather than at most of them.
The cove exists to stop a blowout under the wall
People build the cove because the instructions say to and then treat it as a comfort feature. Its actual job is stated plainly: a proper cove around the inner perimeter prevents the liner from blowing out underneath the steel frame. It fills the sharp angle where the wall meets the floor so water pressure cannot force the liner into that corner and drive it under the wall. Dimensions differ between manufacturers, with one guide specifying a six by six inch compacted mason sand cove and another an eight inch sand or foam cove, and preformed peel-and-stick or snap-in-place foam coves are an accepted alternative to sand. Use your manufacturer’s figure. And get the placement right too, since the welded seams where the wall and floor panels meet must land on the center of the cove.
Measure from the flat floor, because the cove is not the bottom
The measuring trap, and it is a natural mistake because the cove is the lowest thing you can see. Guidance is explicit: measure from the flat floor, not the cove, to the top of the metal wall to determine wall height, and take that measurement in two or more locations. Wall heights are forty-eight, fifty-two or fifty-four inches, and those are close enough together that measuring from the wrong datum can put you a whole size out. Getting this wrong is not recoverable by technique, which is why it belongs before ordering rather than during installation.
Your liner type decides what a measuring error costs
This is the difference between an annoying afternoon and a returned liner. J-hook and beaded liners are described as true to size and offering no room for adjustment, so an incorrect measurement produces a liner either too tight to reach the top or too loose, causing wrinkles. An overlap liner is forgiving in exactly the way they are not: you can always pull the liner further over the wall to remove wrinkles, whereas a J-hook liner has a fixed wall height and is not adjustable that way. So if you are ordering a beaded or J-hook liner, the measurement has to be right rather than close, and if you are working with an overlap liner you have some slack in both senses. Note also which parts come off: J-hook and overlap liners require the top ledges to be removed, and beaded liners do not.
Read the pattern of the wrinkles, not just their presence
The best diagnostic in liner installation, because it identifies a specific cause from a specific appearance. Guidance describes it directly: you can tell the floor has rotated if the vertical wrinkles in the wall are twisting in one direction rather than running straight vertically. That is not a stretching problem and pulling harder will not fix it. The remedy is to stand outside the pool, reach over the ledge with a soft bristled brush or a shop broom, and pull back on the floor of the liner around the cove area to recenter it. Straight vertical wrinkles are a different problem. Twisted ones mean the floor went in rotated, and knowing that saves an hour of pulling in the wrong direction.
The shop vac is not optional, and water is the deadline
The method is standard and the timing is the point. Put a shop vacuum hose through the skimmer cutout, seal around it with tape, and run the vacuum to draw the liner tight against the wall while adjusting with short tugs to work out wrinkles. Everything you want to fix has to be fixed before there is enough water to hold the liner in place. If wrinkles do appear as you fill, the instruction is to stop the water immediately and either brush them toward the walls with a soft bristled brush or restart the vacuuming to reset the tension. Filling through a wrinkle you meant to come back to is how a wrinkle becomes permanent.
Two ways to ruin a liner in the first five minutes, and one that is not your fault
First, do not open the carton with a utility knife. More than one supplier says this explicitly because a blade through the box slashes the vinyl inside, and it is a thirty second way to destroy the most expensive single component. Second, tape over the screws at the wall joint before the liner goes in, because they will puncture it. And third, a failure that is genuinely not an installation error: a liner that floats is described as typically caused by groundwater behind the liner, and wrinkles from that can return even after a good install. That is a site drainage problem rather than a technique problem, and it is worth naming so nobody redoes a correct installation twice trying to fix it. Related: if a bead keeps popping out of the track, the water may be too low, since the liner shrinks, or the bead was not seated evenly.
Before the liner comes out of the box
Check the forecast for a sunny day between about seventy and eighty-five degrees.
Measure wall height from the flat floor, not the cove, in two or more locations.
Confirm whether your liner is overlap, beaded or J-hook, since that decides your tolerance.
Know which top ledges have to come off for your liner type.
Build or rebuild the cove to the dimension your manufacturer specifies.
Tape over every screw at the wall joint.
Have a shop vacuum and tape ready before the liner is hung, not after.
Arrange a second person, and plan to open the carton without a blade.
Who this is really for
Anybody replacing a liner, which is the maintenance event every above-ground pool eventually reaches. It is also the job where a homeowner is most likely to be working alone, in the wrong weather, against a deadline set by a water truck.
It matters most for beaded and J-hook liners, which are true to size and offer no room to absorb a measuring error, and for anybody whose last liner developed wrinkles they never resolved. That second case is worth diagnosing rather than repeating, since twisted vertical wrinkles mean a rotated floor while a liner that floats points at groundwater and will do it again regardless of technique.
The case for having somebody do it is partly the two-person reality of handling a large sheet of warm vinyl and partly that the constraints are unforgiving in ways that are not obvious.
