Berkley Jensen assembly
BJ’s hardtop, built by Sunjoy. Check the recall, then build it with a crew.
Berkley Jensen is BJ’s Wholesale Club’s gazebo brand, and the gazebos are actually made by Sunjoy, so parts and support run through them. They are mostly galvanized-steel hardtops that need a four-to-five-person build, and importantly, certain models were recalled for roof panels that can dislodge in wind.
A BJ’s hardtop with one important safety note
Berkley Jensen is the house brand at BJ’s Wholesale Club, and its gazebos are manufactured by Sunjoy, which means replacement parts and customer service come through Sunjoy rather than the store. Most are galvanized-steel hardtops on powder-coated frames, in sizes like ten by twelve and twelve by fourteen, with cedar-wood-post, fabric-top and grill versions also sold.
These are substantial structures: the assembly manuals explicitly call for four to five people, so it is a real crew job, not a solo build. The roof is the hard part, as with any hardtop.
The one thing every owner should check first is the recall. In 2024, certain Berkley Jensen gazebos were recalled because their roof panels can dislodge in high winds, an injury hazard, and BJ’s offers a free repair kit to secure them. So before anything else, check your model, and get the kit if it applies.

What a Berkley Jensen gazebo needs
Check the recall and secure the roof panels
This comes first, before assembly or use. In 2024, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of certain Berkley Jensen gazebos because their roof panels can dislodge in high winds, which poses an injury hazard. So check your model number and purchase date against BJ’s recall information at bjs.com/help/recall or by emailing gazebos@bjs.com, and if yours is affected, request the free repair kit, which includes shipping, to secure the roof panels. Whether or not yours is on the list, make sure every roof panel is firmly and correctly secured during assembly, this is the single most important safety step.
It genuinely takes four to five people
The assembly manuals are explicit that these gazebos must be installed with four to five people, so this is not a build to attempt alone or even as a couple. Line up a full crew before you start, and have the needed tools ready, a drill, hammer, screwdriver, tape measure and a stable ladder, none of which are included. Build the frame square and level first, then tackle the roof, which is the trickiest and most people-intensive stage. With enough hands it goes smoothly, without them it becomes unsafe and frustrating.
Parts and support come through Sunjoy
Because Berkley Jensen gazebos are made by Sunjoy, the instructions are clear: do not return the product to the store. Instead, for any missing or damaged parts, replacement roof panels or hardware, or assembly questions, contact Sunjoy customer service directly at 1-866-578-6569 or bj@sunjoygroup.com, while BJ’s Wholesale Club at 1-800-934-1204 handles club-level questions. So check all parts against the list before you begin, and keep those Sunjoy contacts handy, they are your route to anything you need for the gazebo.
Anchor it firmly against wind
Wind is the key risk with these, indeed it is what drove the roof-panel recall, so anchor the gazebo firmly to the ground and make sure the roof is fully secured. A well-anchored hardtop with properly fastened panels stands up to normal weather, but a poorly secured one is vulnerable. So take anchoring seriously, use the appropriate anchors for your surface, and do not skip any roof-panel fasteners. Given the recall history specifically involves panels in wind, this is the area to be most thorough about on a Berkley Jensen.
Look after the steel to prevent rust
The steel components are treated with rust-inhibiting paint, so handle them carefully during assembly to avoid scratching that protective coating. If a scratch or chip does happen, cover it promptly with rust-inhibiting paint to stop rust taking hold, and any light surface rust that appears later can be removed with a small amount of regular cooking oil or WD-40. A little care here keeps the frame and roof looking good and lasting well through years of outdoor exposure, which is what you want from a permanent hardtop.
Before you build
Check your model against the BJ’s recall and get the repair kit if needed.
Line up four to five people for the build.
Have a drill, hammer, screwdriver, tape measure and ladder ready.
Note the Sunjoy contacts for parts and support.
And plan how you will anchor it firmly against wind.
Where an installer helps
Because the manuals call for four to five people, an experienced crew makes a genuinely multi-person hardtop build manageable and safe.
Because securing every roof panel correctly is the critical safety step, especially given the recall history, and getting it right matters.
Because anchoring a large hardtop firmly against wind is what keeps it standing.
For most buyers the value is a correctly-built, fully-secured, well-anchored gazebo rather than a risky under-staffed build, and an installer will also flag if your model needs the recall repair kit.
What an installer does
- Checks whether your model is affected by the recall.
- Builds the frame and hardtop roof with an adequate crew.
- Secures every roof panel correctly and safely.
- Anchors the gazebo firmly against wind.
- Sources any parts through Sunjoy rather than the store.
- Advises on rust care and ongoing maintenance.

Questions people ask
Were Berkley Jensen gazebos recalled?
Certain models were, yes. In 2024 the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced a recall of some Berkley Jensen gazebos because their roof panels can dislodge in high winds, posing an injury hazard, and BJ’s offers a free repair kit to secure them. So check your model and purchase date at bjs.com/help/recall or email gazebos@bjs.com, and request the kit if yours is affected. Either way, make sure the roof panels are firmly secured.
How many people do I need to build it?
Four to five, the assembly manuals are explicit about it. These are large hardtop gazebos, so it is a genuine crew job rather than something to attempt alone or as a pair. Line up enough help before starting, and have a drill, hammer, screwdriver, tape measure and ladder ready, as tools are not included. The roof is the most people-intensive stage.
Who do I contact for missing or broken parts?
Sunjoy, not the store, since that is who makes them. The instructions specifically say not to return the product to the store, and to contact Sunjoy customer service at 1-866-578-6569 or bj@sunjoygroup.com for replacement parts, roof panels or hardware and assembly help. BJ’s Wholesale Club at 1-800-934-1204 handles club-level questions. So keep those contacts handy.
How do I keep it from rusting?
The steel is treated with rust-inhibiting paint, so avoid scratching that coating during assembly. If a scratch happens, cover it promptly with rust-inhibiting paint, and remove any light surface rust that appears later with a little cooking oil or WD-40. Keeping the protective paint intact is the main thing, and it keeps the frame and roof looking good and lasting through years outdoors.
Is it sturdy?
When built with a full crew, every roof panel secured, and firmly anchored, yes, it is a solid galvanized-steel hardtop. The important caveats are to address the recall if your model is affected, secure all roof panels, and anchor it well, since wind is the main risk and was behind the roof-panel recall. Done properly, it is a durable permanent structure.
