A vinyl fence is engineered to move, and almost every vinyl failure is an installation that stopped it. Which makes the temperature on the day you build it an actual input to the job rather than a comfort question, because the gap you leave in cold weather is not the gap you leave in warm.
A material that has to move, and a build that has to let it
Vinyl fence is bought because it does not rot, does not need painting and does not warp the way wood does. All of that is true. What comes with it is a property wood does not have to anything like the same degree, which is that PVC expands and contracts noticeably with temperature, and a vinyl fence system is designed around that movement rather than in spite of it.

What to get right, specifically
The gap is a function of the temperature you are building in

Below forty degrees the material itself changes
This is separate from the expansion question and it is about handling rather than allowances. The practical guidance is to store materials in a heated space overnight before a cold install, use a rubber mallet only and never a hammer, and allow extra cure time for concrete. Below twenty degrees, the advice is to avoid installing at all. The ideal window is described as sixty to eighty degrees, which is also the window where the expansion allowance is least fussy, so if the schedule permits any flexibility this is where to use it.
Frozen ground past eight inches is a different job
A specific and useful threshold. If the ground is frozen deeper than eight inches, a manual post hole digger will not cut it, and the options are a power auger with a carbide-tipped bit or postponing the work. Forcing a standard auger into frozen ground damages the equipment and produces rough, oversized holes, which then need more concrete and give a less accurate post position. This is worth establishing before the crew arrives rather than after two hours of trying, and it is one of the more common reasons a winter fence install turns into a two-visit job.
Aluminum inserts have three different rules, not one
Worth reading carefully because the requirements are not uniform. Inserts are required in all gate posts, recommended for end posts on fences five feet or taller, and necessary for corner posts at angles under one hundred and thirty-five degrees. That last one is the rule nobody knows, and it matters because a yard with an angled corner rather than a square one crosses that threshold without anybody noticing. In high-wind regions with sustained speeds above fifty miles per hour, the guidance is to reinforce every post. The insert does three jobs: it adds rigidity, it prevents post flex, and it gives a solid substrate for mounting gate hinges and latches, which is why the gate rule is a requirement rather than a recommendation.
Gates are where a vinyl fence fails first
A gate is the only part of the fence that carries a moving load, and vinyl is not a structural material in the way a wood gate frame is. Darker colors move more
A purchase decision with an installation consequence that nobody connects at the showroom. Darker colors absorb more heat, so a dark fence in full sun reaches a higher surface temperature than a white one in the same weather, which means more thermal movement across the same day. It does not make dark vinyl a bad choice, and it does mean the expansion allowances matter more on a south-facing dark run than on a shaded white one. Fence experience is not automatically vinyl experience
