Choose a wall that holds more than forty-two inches and you have changed which article of the electrical code applies to your yard.
Depth gets chosen because a taller wall is better for swimming. It is also the threshold at which the NEC stops treating a pool as storable and starts treating it as permanently installed, which, once a pump is attached, generally brings an equipotential bonding requirement, a permit and an inspection. Nobody mentions that at the point of sale.
One dimension decides which rules you are under
Everything difficult about setting an above-ground pool appears to be groundwork: getting the site level, getting it level the right way, and keeping several tons of water from finding the low spot. That is genuinely the hard part of the physical installation and it is covered elsewhere in this category. It is not the part that can hurt somebody.
The electrical requirements are, and they turn on a single number that nobody treats as a regulatory decision. Under the NEC, a pool capable of holding water deeper than 42 inches is classified as a permanently installed pool rather than a storable one. Once a pool is permanent and has electrical equipment attached, a pump, a heater or a light, equipotential bonding is generally required. Below that line the code takes a different view entirely: the storable pools part of Article 680 specifies no bonding requirements.
So two pools that look like variations on the same product, one holding 42 inches and one holding 48, are in different parts of the code, and one of them carries a bonding grid, an electrical permit and an inspection. Depth gets chosen for swimming. The consequence is legal and electrical, and it arrives later.
What bonding is doing is worth understanding, because it is not what people assume from the word grounding. Grounding is about the safety of the circuit. Bonding is about the safety of the pool environment, and it works by making everything the same voltage rather than by carrying current away. The guidance puts it well: if everything is at the same voltage, there is no voltage difference to push current through a person standing in the water while touching a metal rail. That is the whole idea, and it is why the bonding conductor is explicitly not required to be run back to a panel or an electrode.

The bonding is not in the box with the pool and is almost never in the pool installer’s quote. If nobody has mentioned it and the pool holds more than 42 inches, that is the gap to close before the water goes in.
What to get right, specifically
Check the depth rating, because 42 inches is a code threshold
Under the NEC a pool capable of holding water deeper than 42 inches is a permanently installed pool rather than a storable one, and once it is permanent and has a pump, heater or light attached, equipotential bonding is generally required under 680.26. The 2023 edition specifies no bonding requirements for storable pools at all. So the single most consequential thing to read on a pool spec sheet is the maximum water depth, and it is the number people skim past because they are comparing diameters. If the pool you are considering sits just over the line, that is worth knowing before purchase rather than after delivery, since the difference is a bonding grid, a permit and an inspection.
Bonding is not grounding, and the difference is the whole point
Worth understanding rather than memorizing, because the mental model changes what you expect. Grounding concerns the safety of the electrical circuit. Even an inspector got this backwards in a documented case
Included because it should lower anybody’s confidence in secondhand explanations of this subject, including confident ones. In a forum thread a homeowner reports being told by their local building inspector that the NEC wants the number eight conductor connected to the service panel ground or neutral. A more experienced respondent corrects it plainly: you do not connect the number eight to any circuit conductors, that happens indirectly by connecting the bond wire to the motor, and what you are doing is bonding all the metal parts together. If the person performing the inspection can have the model inverted, a homeowner working from a blog post has no chance. This is a subject to resolve with a licensed electrician and the authority having jurisdiction rather than by reading.
The single perimeter wire may no longer be acceptable, and the guides have not caught up
This is the live part and it is genuinely unsettled. Nearly every guide describes equipotential bonding as a continuous number eight solid copper loop buried around the pool, and a Tentative Interim Amendment to the NEC, TIA 23-9, approved in October 2023, revised 680.26 to clarify that a single number eight copper wire around a pool is no longer an acceptable method in most cases, with structural steel or a copper grid required instead. The backstory is that during the 2020 code cycle a proposal to remove the single conductor allowance was rejected, despite substantiation that a single bare solid copper conductor performed insufficiently in testing by NEETRAC, EPRI and ENEREX. And sources have not converged: an installer guide dated 2026 still describes the single loop as the requirement, while a code reference dated 2025 flags TIA 23-9 as superseding it. Both are current, which means the only reliable answer is your authority having jurisdiction.
The water is a bonded element, and it has a specified contact area
The requirement most likely to surprise somebody, because it is not intuitive that water is a thing you bond. NEC 680.26(C) requires the pool water to be in constant contact with a corrosion-resistant conductive surface of at least nine square inches, which in practice means a listed water bonding device fitted into the circulation system, typically near the skimmer or a return. Nine square inches is a specific area rather than a token connection, and a fitting that has corroded or been replaced with a non-listed part during a repair quietly removes it. If a pool has had plumbing work done, the water bond is worth confirming still exists.
Sheet metal screws are specifically prohibited
A small, concrete prohibition that gets violated because the fasteners are convenient and the pool wall is thin steel. Guidance is explicit that sheet metal screws and rivets cannot be used to connect the bonding conductor, and that stainless machine screws should be used instead, with UL listed direct burial lugs for the connections. UpCodes states the rule flatly: sheet metal screws shall not be used. The reason is that a bonding connection has to remain a reliable low resistance path for decades in a wet environment, and a sheet metal screw in thin gauge steel is neither mechanically nor electrically dependable over that span.
A double-insulated pump reduces the work and does not remove it
This exception gets read as an exemption and it is not. Metal parts of listed equipment with an approved double insulation system are not bonded, which is the actual relief. But the code then requires that a solid eight AWG copper conductor of sufficient length to make a bonding connection to a REPLACEMENT motor be extended from the pool equipotential bonding means to an accessible point near the pump. In other words the grid still has to reach the pump location, deliberately, so that whoever fits a non double-insulated replacement motor in eight years has something to bond it to. Skipping that leaves a future owner with a pump they cannot legally bond without excavating.
GFCI, receptacle distances, and getting it inspected while it is visible
Three items that travel with the bonding and are easier to get right at the same time. GFCI protection is required for all pool pump circuits regardless of voltage, at 240 volts as well as 120, and a useful piece of field knowledge is that most pool pump GFCI trips come from moisture in the motor rather than a wiring fault. Receptacles have a geometry: at least one 125 volt receptacle between six and twenty feet from the inside wall, nothing permitted closer than six feet, and everything within twenty feet on GFCI. And schedule the inspection before backfilling and filling, because a buried bonding conductor is checked while it can still be seen, and an inspector arriving after the pool is full and the yard is restored has no way to verify the thing they are there to verify.
Before you buy the pool
Read the maximum water depth on the spec sheet and note whether it exceeds 42 inches.
Call the building department and ask what is required for a pool of that depth with a pump.
Ask which NEC edition they enforce and whether TIA 23-9 or local amendments apply.
Establish whether an electrical permit is required, and who pulls it.
Get bonding priced separately, since it is not in the pool kit or usually in the pool quote.
Engage a licensed electrician for the bonding rather than treating it as part of assembly.
Plan for a water bonding device in the circulation system, not just metal parts.
Schedule the inspection for before backfill and filling, while conductors are visible.
Who this is really for
Anybody buying an above-ground pool with a pump, which is essentially all of the permanent ones. The site work gets all the attention because it is visibly difficult, and the electrical requirement is invisible, absent from the box, absent from most quotes, and attached to a dimension nobody reads as a regulatory threshold.
It also matters for anybody who already has one. If a pool holds more than 42 inches, has a pump, and nobody has ever mentioned bonding or pulled a permit, that is worth resolving rather than assuming it was handled. Same if plumbing work has been done since installation, since a water bonding fitting can be removed or replaced with a non-listed part by somebody who did not know what it was for.
