A motorized desk is furniture with a control system attached
FlexiSpot builds height-adjustable desks around a powered steel frame with lifting columns, a keypad, and in most cases presets and a collision sensor. The physical assembly is not difficult, and the manuals are decent. What is different from ordinary flat-pack furniture is that at the end you have a machine, and machines have states.
The state that surprises everyone is the reset. Out of the box, or after being unplugged, a FlexiSpot frame commonly needs to be reset before it will travel normally, and until then it can refuse to move or behave oddly. The display shows a reset prompt, you hold the down key until the desk reaches its lowest point and rebounds slightly, and it then confirms it is done. It is not a fault and it is not a defective motor, but it looks exactly like one if you do not know it exists.
The other thing that catches people is physical. These desks are assembled upside down, with the frame bolted to the underside of the top, and then the whole thing has to be turned over onto its feet. That is the heaviest, most awkward moment of the build, and it is where desktops get scratched and people hurt their backs.

What goes wrong, specifically
The reset, which looks exactly like a broken desk
This is the one worth knowing before you start. When the display shows the reset prompt, press and hold the down key until the desk travels all the way to its lowest position and rebounds slightly, at which point the display confirms the reset is finished. Until that is done the desk may not respond to commands at all. It is the most common reason a perfectly good FlexiSpot gets reported as dead on arrival. If the desk stops responding later, after being unplugged or moved, the same reset is usually the answer.
You build it upside down, then flip a heavy desk
The frame is bolted to the underside of the top with the whole assembly inverted, and then it has to be turned over onto its feet. FlexiSpot illustrate this step in their manuals, and it is where the damage happens. Do it with two people, and build on carpet or on the flattened packaging, because their manual specifically suggests working on carpet to prevent scratching the top. If your model has a glass surface, do not set the glass down directly on a hard floor at any point during the build.
Anti-collision has four settings, and one of them is off
The collision sensor stops and reverses the desk when it hits something. It has four sensitivity levels, from off through low, medium and high, and you cycle between them by pressing and holding the up and down keys together for about five seconds. This matters in two directions. If the desk stops for no apparent reason mid-travel, the sensitivity is probably too high for your setup. If it does not stop when it meets an obstruction, it is set too low, or off. Set it deliberately rather than leaving it wherever it happened to be, particularly if there is a windowsill, a drawer unit or a chair arm inside the desk’s range.
Error codes are often a cool-down, not a failure
If the display shows E01 or E02, FlexiSpot’s guidance is to let the desk sit idle for at least eighteen minutes before using it again. These frames have a duty cycle and are not designed for continuous up and down cycling, which is exactly what people do for the first ten minutes after building one. Waiting is the fix. If other codes appear and it will not respond to the reset, check that every cable is properly seated and undamaged before assuming a fault.
Cables are a moving part on a desk that moves
This is the failure that shows up weeks later. A desk with eighteen inches of travel will pull anything plugged into it, and a monitor cable or a power lead routed at standing height goes taut and either unplugs, tears, or drags a machine off a shelf when the desk goes down. Run the cables so they have slack at the desk’s highest position, secure them to the frame so they move with it, and then cycle the desk through its full travel and watch what happens before you consider the job finished.
Weight capacity varies by model, so do not assume
FlexiSpot manuals quote different limits across the range, with figures well over a hundred pounds and some considerably higher. Check your own model rather than carrying a number over from a review of a different one. Their guidance also includes not placing heavy objects on the desk while it is in the raised position, and keeping children and pets clear while it is traveling, both of which are worth passing on to whoever uses it.
Uneven columns and the secondhand warranty trap
If the two lifting columns end up at slightly different heights the desk will sit skewed, which is a known enough issue that FlexiSpot publish troubleshooting for it, and the reset is usually part of the answer. Separately, if you are buying used, note that their warranty runs to the original purchaser only, is not transferable, and applies to purchases from authorized retailers. A secondhand FlexiSpot is a fine desk and an unwarranted one.
Before you start
Clear enough floor to lay the top face-down with room to work around it, and put carpet or the flattened packaging underneath.
Have a second person available for the flip, and a Phillips screwdriver or drill, which is not supplied.
Check the box for the keypad screws, which are packed separately from the rest of the hardware and are easy to miss.
Work out where power is and how the cables will run before the desk is standing, not after.
Know that the reset exists, so the first minute of powering it up does not turn into a return request.
Who this is really for
