Turning the wall into the storage system

Gladiator, a Whirlpool brand, sells two ways of making a garage wall do the work. GearTrack is a steel channel system, six inches high and four feet long per section with a patented double channel, screwed to the wall so hooks and accessories can be moved along it. GearWall is their take on slatwall, a panel that covers a larger area and takes the same enormous range of hooks, bins and baskets.

The appeal of either is the same and it is a good one. You do the drilling once, and after that everything is rearrangeable. Bikes move, hooks slide, seasonal stuff comes and goes, and the wall never gets another hole. That is the opposite of screwing individual hooks into studs wherever they happen to fall.

The confusion is in the ratings. Gladiator publishes GearTrack at seventy-five pounds per linear foot and GearWall at fifty pounds per square foot, both assuming the product is screwed into three wall studs. Those are perfectly sensible numbers for two different geometries, and they are impossible to compare standing in a store. The practical consequence is worth knowing before you buy: heavy, concentrated loads belong on GearTrack, while GearWall is the better answer for covering an area with lots of lighter things.

What to get right, specifically

Check your screw length against your wiring before you start

This comes straight from Gladiator’s installation guide and it is the most important thing on this page. Compare screw length to electrical wire locations and make sure the screw will not pierce wiring. Their spec is at least one inch of thread engagement into the stud, and between one and one and a quarter inches where you are near wiring, with the correct screw length depending on your drywall thickness. What makes this matter more than on a typical mounting job is the method: the instruction is a flat-head screw in every slot at every stud, so you are driving a long line of screws along a garage wall that is full of outlets, switches and the runs between them. Trace where the wiring goes before the first hole rather than thinking about it once.

Heavy loads go on GearTrack, not GearWall

The ratings are published in different units, which makes the comparison awkward, so hold on to the practical version. GearTrack is rated seventy-five pounds per linear foot and GearWall fifty pounds per square foot. Concentrated weight, meaning bikes, loaded cabinets, ladders and long heavy tools, belongs on the channel. GearWall earns its place covering a wide area with many lighter items, and Gladiator makes shelves designed specifically to work with it. Plenty of garages use both for exactly that reason.

Three studs is part of the rating, not a suggestion

Those capacity figures assume the product is fixed into three wall studs, or three screws into concrete. That is a condition of the number rather than a nice-to-have, and it is why a section spanning only two studs is not rated the same way. Map the studs across the full run before deciding where sections start and finish, because garage framing is often less regular than the rest of the house, and a section that happens to catch only two is the one that will disappoint you later.

Decide the height once, with what you own in mind

Everything about this system is adjustable except where the track or panel sits on the wall. Before drilling, work out what actually needs hanging: bike wheel height, the length of the longest tool, whether a lawn mower or wheelbarrow needs to pass beneath, and whether cabinets or a workbench will occupy the lower wall. It is worth chalking the line and living with it for a day. This is the one decision the system does not let you change casually.

The rated figure already includes a margin, so use the rated figure

Gladiator notes that the seventy-five pounds per linear foot rating is based on lab testing at three hundred pounds per linear foot, across a temperature range from minus thirty to a hundred and fifty degrees Fahrenheit. That is a healthy margin and it is exactly why you should work to the rated number rather than treating the test figure as headroom. The margin exists to cover a real garage: temperature swings, a bike dropped onto a hook, a load that shifts. It is not spare capacity you are entitled to spend.

Check the rating printed for the product you actually bought

Figures vary a little across the range, and at least one retail listing quotes a higher per-linear-foot capacity for a channel than the installation guide does. Seventy-five per linear foot and fifty per square foot are the figures in Gladiator’s own installation documentation and the ones to plan against, but if the packaging or listing for your specific product says something different, use that and follow the instructions supplied with it. Accessories have their own individual limits too, and the lower of the accessory rating and the wall rating is what governs.

Use the screw track, and skip the pre-drilling

Two small things that make the job noticeably easier. Gladiator builds a screw track into the channel that helps start screws, stops them walking, and acts as a guide so the spacing looks even, which matters on a run that is going to be at eye level for years. And pre-drilling is not required for attachment to the wall, so ordinary woodworking tools are enough. If a screw is fighting you, that is worth investigating rather than forcing, since something unexpected in the wall is exactly what you were checking for earlier.

Before you drill

Map the studs across the whole run and confirm you can get three per section.

Locate outlets, switches and the wiring runs between them, and choose screw length against your drywall thickness.

Work out mounting height from what you actually own, including the tallest and longest items.

Decide the split between GearTrack and GearWall based on where the heavy items will hang.

Check whether the wall is drywall over wood studs, bare studs or masonry, since fasteners differ.

Add up what you plan to hang per section and compare it against the rated capacity, not the lab figure.

Who this is really for

Anyone whose garage walls are currently doing nothing. Wall systems are the cheapest square footage in the building, and the flexibility is real: once the track or panel is up, rearranging takes minutes and leaves no new holes.

It suits households whose storage needs change, which is most of them. Bikes get bigger, sports equipment comes and goes, and a system that adapts without redrilling is worth more over ten years than a wall of individually placed hooks ever is.

The reason to bring somebody in is not that the job is hard, because it genuinely is not. It is the wiring check and the layout. An installer maps the studs and the electrical runs properly, gets the height right for what you actually own, and puts the heavy loads on the system rated to carry them, which is the part the aisle labeling makes surprisingly difficult to work out for yourself.
