What to get right, specifically

Find out which way your joists run before you plan anything

This is the thing owners actually get caught by. The mounting boards are designed to span several ceiling joists so the load is shared across the structure, and the instructions assume the joists run in a particular direction relative to your parking space. In plenty of garages they run the other way. The correct fix is to rotate the layout so the boards still cross multiple joists, which moves everything, rather than lagging each board into a single joist to make the drawing work. Map the joists first, with a stud finder and a probe if necessary, and design the install around what is actually up there.

Joists, never drywall, and never a single mounting point

Obvious in principle and worth stating plainly, because the consequence is a hundred and forty pounds coming down onto a vehicle. The hardware fixes into structural framing, and the whole reason for the mounting boards is to spread that load across more than one member. Drywall anchors have no place in this job at any rating. If the ceiling is finished and you cannot confirm what is behind it, that is the point to open a small inspection hole or bring in somebody who can, rather than trusting a stud finder alone over your car.

There is a minimum load as well as a maximum

Almost everyone checks the maximum and nobody checks the other end.
