In-wall and in-ceiling speakers disappear into the room, which is exactly why people want them, and the price of that is a permanent opening in a finished surface. Klipsch makes the cutting itself as forgiving as they reasonably can: use the supplied template, or take the cutout dimensions from the product page, and note that the sizes listed are minimums with the allowance that you may add a quarter of an inch to each dimension if you cannot cut accurately. They even publish guidance on drawing and cutting a circle without a template.

What has no tolerance is the decision about where the hole goes. Once it is cut, the speaker is where it is. Joists, studs, the position of the listening seats, the run of the ceiling, and on Atmos installations whether the height channels sit above or slightly in front of the seating all have to be resolved on paper first. Klipsch makes pivoting-driver models precisely so the sound can be aimed after the fact, which helps, but it does not move a hole.

Then there is what is behind the surface. Klipsch’s instructions are direct: be careful not to cut through existing wiring or plumbing, and avoid compromising any fire stops between studs. That last one is the sort of thing homeowners have never heard of and installers think about first, because a fire stop is there for a reason and cutting through one is not a cosmetic problem.

If the ceiling is already finished and there is no attic above it, the cable run is the project and the speakers are the easy part.

What to get right, specifically

Use the template, and know you have a quarter inch of grace

Klipsch supply a template and list cutout dimensions on the product page if it has gone missing, with a genuinely useful note: the sizes listed are minimums, and if you cannot achieve an accurate cut you may add a quarter of an inch to each dimension. The grille covers a small margin. What you cannot do is go undersized and open it up by feel with the speaker in your hand, which is how a clean circle becomes a ragged one. Mark it, cut to the line, and if in doubt use the allowance deliberately rather than accidentally.

The clamps have a reach limit, so total thickness matters

This is the constraint almost nobody anticipates. The speaker is held by dog legs that swivel out as you tighten four screws, sandwiching the frame against the back of the surface. Those legs only reach so far. The clearest illustration is drop ceilings: installer guidance is to brace tiles with three eighths or half inch plywood, and specifically notes that three quarter inch plywood is often too thick because the clamps may not have enough reach to span the tile and the plywood together. The same limit applies to thick plaster, double-layered drywall, or a ceiling that has been boarded over. Measure the total material thickness before ordering.

The cable is a code item, not just wire

Klipsch specifies eighteen gauge minimum and tells you to comply with all building codes in your area, and standard practice for anything inside a wall or ceiling is UL-rated cable marked CL2 or CL3. Ordinary speaker wire or lamp cord is not rated for in-wall use and is a fire code issue rather than a performance one. Installers also keep in-wall runs about twelve inches away from recessed lighting cans and de-energize circuits before drilling, both of which are worth doing whether or not anyone is inspecting the work.

Do not compromise a fire stop

Klipsch calls this out in their installation instructions alongside not cutting through wiring or plumbing, and it deserves its own line because most homeowners have never heard the term. Fire stops are horizontal blocking between studs designed to slow fire moving up a cavity. They are also, unhelpfully, exactly what a cable being fished down a wall runs into. The answer is to route around them properly rather than drilling through blocking without knowing what it is, and if a run genuinely has to pass through framing, to do it in a way that maintains the intended fire separation.

Consider back boxes, especially in a shallow cavity

A speaker installed bare in a ceiling uses the cavity as its enclosure, which means the cavity depth, the insulation and the neighboring joists all shape the sound, and none of them were designed to. Installers consistently report that adding a back box or enclosure makes a substantial difference in a shallow cavity, to the point that a modest speaker in a proper enclosure can outperform an expensive one installed bare. Enclosures also help with sound leaking into the room above, which matters when the ceiling speakers are under a bedroom. It is easier to plan for at the outset than to retrofit.

If the drywall is not up yet, use new construction brackets

Klipsch makes brackets designed to be fitted before drywall goes on, and their instructions note these make the installation simple when used that way. If you are building, renovating, or opening a ceiling for any other reason, that is by far the best moment to place speakers: positions are exact, cable is easy, and there is no cutting into a finished surface at all. Deciding you might want speakers later and roughing in the cable and brackets now is one of the cheapest decisions available during construction.

Polarity, aiming, and checking the clamps later

Three finishing points. Maintain correct polarity using the wire’s color coding or markings, since a speaker wired out of phase with its pair sounds hollow rather than obviously broken. On models with pivoting drivers, aim them toward the listening position, which is the whole point of that feature and matters most for Atmos height channels placed above or slightly in front of the seats. And clamp tension loosens over time with vibration, so it is worth checking periodically rather than assuming the speakers are as tight as the day they went in.

Before you cut anything

Plan speaker positions against joist locations and the actual seating, on paper, before marking a ceiling.

Measure total material thickness, including any bracing or additional layers, against the clamp reach.

Check attic or crawl space access, since that determines whether the cable run is an hour or a day.

Who this is really for

People who want the sound without the furniture. Architectural speakers are the answer for a room where floor-standing speakers are not wanted or not possible, and for Atmos height channels, which effectively have to be in the ceiling to work properly.

It suits anyone who is already opening a wall or ceiling. During a renovation the marginal cost of roughing in cable and brackets is small and the finished result is far better than anything retrofitted, so it is worth deciding before the drywall goes on rather than after.

And it is the clearest case in this category for having somebody else do it. Not because the speaker is difficult, it takes four screws, but because the job involves cutting permanent openings in finished surfaces, running cable that has to satisfy fire code, and knowing what is behind the drywall before the saw goes in. Those are exactly the parts where experience is worth paying for and mistakes are expensive to undo.
