A face frame gives you wood to plane away. Frameless gives you none, so the crooked wall becomes a piece of cabinetmaking.
No wall is straight and every run has to end against one. On a face frame cabinet the material to fit it is already projecting past the box. On a frameless cabinet you build a scribe from plywood and a ripped stile, and it has to match the species and the finish because part of it shows when the door opens.
Two different boxes, and nobody explains the difference at the counter
American cabinetry comes in two constructions and the distinction is usually sold as a look. Framed, sometimes called face frame or American, has a solid hardwood frame across the front of the box, made of vertical stiles and horizontal rails, and the doors hang on that frame. Frameless, sometimes called European, has no frame at all: the front edges of the box are the front of the cabinet, and doors and slides mount directly to the panels. The showroom conversation is about whether you want to see a border of wood around the opening.
The installation consequences are larger than the aesthetic ones and they start with the fact that no wall is straight and no corner is square. Every cabinet run ends by fitting a case to a surface that is neither, and the two systems arrive at that moment with very different resources. On a face frame cabinet the stile already projects past the case, so adding a rabbet to it is straightforward and the wall contour gets planed or sanded into hardwood that is already there.
A frameless cabinet has nothing projecting past the case, so the scribe has to be built. The published method is a small piece of joinery: cut a three or four inch strip of half inch plywood to the height of the box excluding the kick space, rip a stile to width, rabbet the back of it, and pocket-screw the stile to the plywood edge. And it has a finish requirement attached, because if the scribe is mounted flush to the door face then roughly an eighth of an inch of the plywood shows when the door opens, which means it has to be the same species as the cabinet exteriors and finished to match.
That is the shape of this whole subject. Neither system is better. They put the work in different places, need different hardware, and reward different skills, and a customer who chose one for the way it looks has also chosen an installation. The single most useful thing to establish before ordering hardware is which construction you have, because hinges, joining screws and slide mounting all change with it and none of them is interchangeable.
What to get right, specifically
Get the joining screw length right, because the wrong one comes out inside the neighbor
This is the most concrete difference and it has numbers. Framed cabinets attach to each other through the width of the face frame, which lets the screws anchor deeply into solid wood, and published guidance gives a usual length of two and a half inches. Frameless cabinets attach directly through the cabinet side panels, so the usual maximum is an inch and a quarter, and the reason is blunt: a shorter screw is needed to avoid poking through the inside of the cabinet. Use the framed length on a frameless box and you put a screw point through a side panel into the next cabinet’s interior, where somebody will eventually find it with a hand. Buy the screws for the construction you actually have.
Frameless needs more screw locations, not just shorter screws
The second half of the same point and it is easy to miss. Because a frameless joint anchors only into the thickness of a side panel rather than into the combined width of two hardwood stiles, each fastener is doing less work. Guidance notes directly that this shallow anchoring may increase the number of screw locations required to attach the cabinets adequately. So the frameless answer is not simply the same joint with a shorter screw, it is more fasteners spread along the height of the joint. Treating it as a like-for-like substitution produces a run that feels solid on installation day and develops movement at the joints over the following year.
Always pre-drill a face frame
A face frame is solid hardwood, usually maple, and hardwood splits along the grain when a screw is driven into it near an edge, which is exactly where these screws go. Published guidance is explicit that pilot holes should be pre-drilled into the face frames to prevent the natural wood from splitting. A split stile at a cabinet joint is visible from the front of a finished kitchen and there is no good repair. This is also the difference between the two systems in the other direction: the engineered panels on a frameless box are far more tolerant of a screw driven without a pilot hole, which is part of why people trained on one system get caught by the other.
Plan the frameless scribe as joinery, not as trim
On a face frame cabinet, fitting to a wall means rabbeting the stile and taking the contour down with a plane or sander, and it is quick because the material is already there. On a frameless cabinet you are building a component: a three or four inch strip of half inch plywood the height of the box excluding the kick, a stile ripped to width with a rabbet in its back, pocket-screwed together, then mounted with two or three screws. If European hinges are being used, those mounting screws can be hidden behind the hinge plates on the gable. And the finish detail matters, because mounting the scribe flush to the door face leaves about an eighth of an inch of plywood visible when the door is open, so it has to be the same species as the cabinet exteriors and finished to match. Plan the material and the finishing time into the job rather than discovering it on the last cabinet.
The face frame is doing structural work, so a frameless box needs more care
Worth understanding because it changes how carefully a frameless box has to be handled and installed. Published guidance notes that the combination of grain directions in a face frame reinforces the horizontal strength of the cabinet at the front opening, and that a face frame minimizes racking, meaning the box being tilted out of square. It also makes the cabinet less likely to warp in shipping and less reliant on wall supports during installation. A frameless box has none of that at the front, which puts the whole burden of holding square on the back panel and on how squarely the box was assembled and hung. If a frameless run is going in, the squareness discipline matters more rather than less.
Hinges are a hard incompatibility, and there is a two-second test
The hardware does not cross over and the reason is mechanical rather than a matter of preference. A face frame mounting plate is designed to screw into a one and a half inch solid wood strip, and on a frameless cabinet there is no wood strip to attach to, so using the wrong hinge produces an insecure mount or a door in the wrong position. The identification test is fast: open a door and look at the opening. A one to two inch border of solid wood means face frame; an edge that looks like the same thin plywood as the cabinet interior means frameless. The edge case is worth knowing too, because some face frames are as narrow as three quarters of an inch, and any solid wood border at all, however narrow, means face frame.
Frameless designs need more fillers, by design rather than by error
This surprises people who expected the sleeker system to need less trim. Guidance notes that more fillers are recommended in frameless designs specifically to ensure minimum clearance is met for door and drawer openings. The reason is geometry: a frameless cabinet has full overlay doors sitting flush with the box edges, so a door next to a wall, an appliance or an inside corner needs clearance to swing that a face frame would have provided automatically. Fillers are not a sign of a badly planned kitchen in a frameless layout, they are part of how the system works, and a design that omits them produces doors that hit walls. Count them at design stage rather than improvising at installation.
Practitioners disagree about how much scribe to leave, and both figures are in use
Worth flagging rather than pretending there is one number. In one builder discussion a contributor insists on a half inch spacer between two framed cabinets and at least a half inch scribe on the cabinet that meets a wall, explicitly correcting others who had said a quarter inch, while another contributor in the same thread says they make each face frame with a quarter inch scribe. Both are working practice from people who install these for a living. The practical reading is that more scribe allowance gives you more room to fit a bad wall and slightly more combined stile width to look at, and the right answer depends on how bad the walls are and how much visual weight you will accept. Decide it before the face frames are made rather than after.
