Chamberlain says it plainly: to find out whether your opener is compatible you need a ladder to locate the learn button on the motor head. Yellow, purple, orange or red, and green are listed as compatible with the hub products. Blue means a 433 MHz opener that will not be operated by them at all. Nothing on the box tells you this.
The one fact that decides the whole purchase is behind the motor head
Most smart home installations begin with a wiring question. This one begins with a compatibility question, and the answer is a physical thing you have to climb up and look at. Garage door openers use rolling code radio systems that have changed generation several times, and Chamberlain marks which generation an opener belongs to with the color of its learn button, the small programming button on the motor head. That color, and not the brand or the age on the label, is what determines whether a myQ hub can operate the door.
Chamberlain lists yellow, purple, orange or red, and green as the colors compatible with the myQ Garage and the myQ Smart Garage Hub. It also states that these will not operate a LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Craftsman or other Chamberlain-manufactured unit using a 433 MHz frequency, which is the blue learn button. So a blue button is a definite answer before any money is spent.
The complication, and it is the thing that catches people who did check, is that Chamberlain now sells more than one myQ product and they do not share a compatibility list. For the newer Smart Garage Control, Chamberlain states it is not intended for use with any Chamberlain Group opener carrying a yellow learn button manufactured between 2010 and 2021, or with any Linear opener. Yellow is a yes on one product and a no on another. That is why the sequence matters: find the button, note the color and the age of the opener, and only then choose which myQ device to buy.
The second hard requirement is safety sensors. The opener must have working photoelectric sensors, the photo eyes mounted low on each side of the door, which openers built after 1993 should have. This is not a technicality. The entire premise of the product is closing a garage door when nobody is standing in the garage, and the sensors are what make that acceptable. On the Smart Garage Control there is a further exclusion for openers whose sensors change power mode, which shows up as the lights on the sensors going out after the door closes.

What to get right, specifically
Find the learn button before you buy anything
Chamberlain’s own instruction is that you need a ladder to locate the learn button on the motor head, and that is the whole compatibility test. Take a flashlight, get up there safely, and note the color: yellow, purple, orange or red, or green are the colors listed as compatible with the hub products, and blue indicates a 433 MHz opener that these will not operate. While you are up there, write down the brand, the model number and the manufacture date from the label, because the next item needs them. This is ten minutes that decides whether the rest of the project exists.
The two myQ products disagree about yellow
This is the trap for people who did their homework, because the color chart they found may have been for the other product. Yellow is listed as compatible with the older myQ Garage and Smart Garage Hub. For the newer Smart Garage Control, Chamberlain states it is not intended for use with any Chamberlain Group opener with a yellow learn button manufactured between 2010 and 2021, nor with any Linear opener. So the color alone is not the answer, the color plus the age plus which myQ device you are buying is the answer. Chamberlain publishes a compatibility tool that takes all of that into account, and it is worth the five minutes rather than reasoning from a chart.
No working safety sensors, no product
The opener must have functioning photoelectric safety sensors, the photo eyes mounted near the floor on each side of the door, which is standard on openers built after 1993. This is a hard requirement rather than a recommendation, because the product exists to close a garage door when you are not standing in the garage, and those sensors are the thing that makes that safe. Before buying, confirm both sensors are present, aligned and indicating properly. On the Smart Garage Control there is an additional exclusion for openers whose sensors change power mode, which you can spot by watching whether the lights on the sensors go out after the door finishes closing.
An old opener still gets you the half you probably wanted
This is worth knowing before writing the product off. Chamberlain states that the myQ Garage and Smart Garage Hub will not operate a garage door opener that uses dip switches, but that either can be configured for Monitor Mode, where the app reports whether the door is open or closed without being able to activate it. For a lot of households the actual anxiety is not opening the door from the road, it is lying in bed wondering whether the door is open, and Monitor Mode answers exactly that. If your opener is too old to be operated, ask about monitoring rather than assuming the answer is no.
Test the garage Wi-Fi standing where the hub will go
A garage is one of the worst radio environments in a house: it is often at the far end of the building, frequently behind a large metal door, and sometimes has masonry walls. The requirements are a 2.4 GHz network with the router within fifty feet, and Chamberlain suggests aiming for signal strength of seventy-five percent or better measured in the garage. The user guide gives an easier field test: hold your phone where the hub will be mounted and look for two or more bars. Do that before you buy, because the answer changes the shopping list.
If you need an extender, it does not go in the garage
This is counterintuitive and it is Chamberlain’s own recommendation. When the garage signal is weak, put the Wi-Fi extender halfway between the router and the hub, not next to the hub. The instinct is to put the extender where the signal is bad, which is exactly where an extender cannot work, because it has nothing strong to repeat. An extender relays what it receives, so it needs to sit somewhere with a solid signal and rebroadcast toward the weak area. Placing it in the garage produces a strong local signal carrying a weak connection, and a hub that drops out intermittently.
Mount the door sensor properly, on a clean surface
The door position sensor is what lets the app tell you whether the door is open or closed, and it attaches to the door itself with adhesive fastening strips. Garage doors are dusty, often oily near the tracks, and sometimes cold, all of which work against adhesive. Clean and dry the mounting area properly and let it come to room temperature if you can, because a sensor that falls off in July gives you a garage door reporting the wrong state, which is worse than no report at all. If you have two doors, note that one hub handles both but the second door needs its own sensor.
Do not operate the door until the install is finished, and watch the first full cycle
Chamberlain’s user guide says not to operate the garage door opener until installation is complete, which matters when you are working on a ladder near a door that can be triggered. When you do test, stay in the garage and watch a full open and a full close, then test the safety reverse by interrupting the photo eyes during a close. Only after that should you close the door from your phone from outside the garage. The kit includes a warning placard meant to be posted, and it is worth actually putting up, particularly in a household where somebody else may not know the door can now move on its own.
