The wire that was never there, and why nobody misses it until now

An old thermostat was a switch. A red wire brought 24 volts in, and closing a circuit to another wire told the furnace to fire or the compressor to run. It needed no power of its own, because it was doing nothing when it was doing nothing. That is why a great many American homes have four wires at the thermostat and no fifth one.

A Nest is a small computer. It runs a display, holds a Wi-Fi connection, watches for motion, and thinks about your schedule when the heat is off. That takes continuous power, and the conductor that supplies it is the common wire, the C wire, which completes a circuit back to the furnace so the thermostat can draw current all the time rather than only while the system is running.

Where there is no C wire, Nest falls back on power stealing: it pulls a trickle through the control circuits themselves. This is a compatibility measure and Google is straightforward about its limits. In a simple system in mild weather it is usually fine. The failures come when demand rises, or when demand disappears entirely, because a long stretch of open windows means the control circuits never close and the battery never gets a chance to recharge.

And this is why the diagnosis is the hard part. Google publishes the symptom list, and what stands out is how little any of it resembles a wiring fault: a message saying heating is delayed for two and a half minutes, a system fan that runs constantly or will not start, a fan cycling on and off over a short period, a battery that drains, and Wi-Fi that keeps disconnecting. A homeowner reading those concludes the furnace is failing, the fan relay is going, and the router needs replacing. All of it is one thermostat that cannot keep itself fed.

What to get right, specifically

Photograph the old wiring before you touch it

This is the highest-value minute of the whole job and it costs nothing. Take a clear, well lit photograph of the old thermostat with the wires still on their terminals, then label each wire with the terminal letter it came from before you pull any of them. Wire colors in HVAC are a convention rather than a standard, and plenty of houses have a white wire on Y or a blue on W because somebody was working with what was on the truck twenty years ago. If you have to call somebody afterward, that photograph is the difference between a ten minute conversation and an hour of tracing.

Look for a spare wire before you buy anything

This is the cheapest fix available and it is genuinely common. Thermostat cable is usually run with more conductors than the old thermostat used, so there is often an unused wire pushed back into the wall cavity at the thermostat end and coiled unused at the furnace. If you find one, it becomes your C wire, connected to the C terminal at the thermostat and to the common terminal on the furnace control board. It has to be landed at BOTH ends to do anything, which is the step people miss. Check for this before ordering a Power Connector or paying for new cable, because the answer is often already in the wall.

Know before you start whether your system is on Google’s list

Google names the system types that need a C wire or a compatible power accessory rather than merely benefiting from one: heating-only, cooling-only, zone-controlled, and heat pump systems. If your house is any of those, treat the C wire as part of the job from the beginning rather than something to find out about during setup. That changes what you buy, how long you book, and whether you want somebody who does this regularly. If your old thermostat already had a C wire connected, the app will typically tell you to connect one to the Nest too.

Run the power test and believe it

During setup the Nest app runs a power test and tells you whether the thermostat is getting enough. This is the one moment the system will volunteer the truth about your wiring, and the temptation when it passes marginally is to carry on and see how it goes. The symptom list above is what seeing how it goes looks like three weeks later, in weather that did not exist on installation day. Note also that this flow applies to the Nest Thermostat and the Learning Thermostat 4th generation; the Thermostat E and Learning 3rd generation and earlier follow a different path, so check the instructions for the generation actually in your hand.

The Power Connector may be free, and most people do not know

If the power test returns "Low power. You need a Nest Power Connector", Google states you can request a free Nest Power Connector. That is worth knowing before you buy one at retail or pay for a cable run you might not need. The connector installs at the furnace or air handler rather than at the thermostat, and it is Google’s sanctioned answer for a system with no spare conductor. It is not a workaround, it is the supported alternative to a C wire.

Breaker off, and if the C wire is dead, check the seating first

Turn off power to the HVAC system at the circuit breaker before working, not just at the system switch. If you get "The C wire isn’t getting power" during the power test, Google’s own sequence is to kill the power at the breaker, take the display off, confirm the C wire is fully inserted into its terminal, and then restore power. Thermostat terminals rely on a conductor being pushed in far enough to be gripped, and a wire that looks connected while sitting a couple of millimeters short is a very common cause of exactly this error. Check the simple thing before assuming the wire itself is bad.

Do not improvise a power fix at the furnace

There is a well known third-party workaround involving adding a resistor across terminals at the furnace to make power stealing viable. It circulates widely, it is not Google’s guidance, and it is a modification to the control wiring of a gas appliance. This page will not recommend it. The supported answers are a real C wire or the Nest Power Connector, both of which are documented, both of which are reversible, and neither of which leaves an undocumented modification in a furnace for the next person to find.

Test it through a real cycle, in both modes if you can

A thermostat that powers up and joins Wi-Fi has not been tested, it has been switched on. Call for heat and confirm the system starts without a delay message, watch the fan start and stop when it should, and if the season allows, do the same in cooling. Some air conditioners use high-current contactors that make power stealing behave differently from the way it behaves on the heating side, so a marginal setup can pass in November and fail in June. Then leave it a few days and check the battery level in the app rather than assuming.

Identify which Nest generation you have, since the setup flow differs.

Find out what kind of system the house has: conventional, heat pump, zoned, heat-only or cool-only.

Photograph and label the existing thermostat wiring before disconnecting anything.

Check the wall cavity and the furnace board for an unused conductor you could use as C.

Locate the HVAC circuit breaker and confirm you can reach the furnace or air handler.

Have the Google Home app installed and the Wi-Fi password on hand.

If the system is a heat pump or zoned, plan on the C wire or a Power Connector from the start.

Who this is really for

People who want the thermostat to be the smart part of the house. It is the device with the clearest payback, because it is the one that runs whether you are thinking about it or not, and the scheduling and remote control genuinely change how a house gets heated. As a swap it is one of the easiest smart home upgrades there is, and in a modern house with a C wire already present it is a twenty minute job that works perfectly.

It also suits anyone with more than one zone, or a rental, or a second home where knowing the temperature remotely has real value. Those are the same houses most likely to need attention paid to the power supply, which is the argument for planning it rather than discovering it.

The case for having somebody do it comes down to what happens if the answer is no spare wire. Somebody who does this regularly opens the wall plate, reads the bundle, checks the furnace board, and tells you inside ten minutes whether this is a swap, a Power Connector, or a cable run. They will land a C wire at both ends rather than one, run the power test properly, and cycle the system in both modes before leaving. If your house is on Google’s list of system types that need a C wire, that is the version worth paying for.

Do I need a C wire for a Nest?

Can I use a resistor instead?

It worked for weeks and then started misbehaving. Why?

That pattern is characteristic of a marginal power supply rather than a fault that appeared. Power stealing depends on the control circuits closing, so a long mild stretch where neither heating nor cooling runs gives the battery no opportunity to recharge, and a change of season can change the behavior in either direction. It is why a setup that passes in mild weather is worth rechecking under real load.
