Paragon Outdoor assembly

No power drill, two people, about five hours. Read the whole manual first.

Paragon’s aluminum roof panels are light enough that two people can build one of these premium hardtops by hand, with no power tools. The catch is that it is a long, methodical job, so read the illustrated manual through and inventory every part before you start.

A premium aluminum hardtop, built by hand over a half-day

Paragon Outdoor makes premium aluminum hardtop gazebos, the Santa Monica, Cambridge and Siena, sold largely through Costco. What sets them apart in a category dominated by galvanised steel is the material: heavy-gauge aluminium with a multi-layered aluminium composite roof, which will not rust, chip, peel or crack, sheds heat and noise, and weighs less than steel while staying strong.

That lighter roof changes the build. Where a steel hardtop often needs a crew and tall ladders to lift its roof, Paragon design theirs for two people to assemble by hand, with no power drill, using only the included hardware and picture instructions. It is genuinely DIY-friendly for a premium gazebo.

The trade-off is time and method. Paragon themselves recommend two assemblers and about five hours, and advise reading the whole illustrated manual and checking the full parts inventory before you begin. Treat it as a methodical half-day project rather than a quick job, and it goes together cleanly into a structure that lasts.

What a premium aluminum hardtop needs

Read the whole manual and inventory the parts before you start

Paragon’s own top piece of advice, and the difference between a smooth build and a frustrating one. Read the step-by-step illustrated manual all the way through first, so you understand how the frame and roof come together, and check every part against the inventory list before you begin. On a five-hour build with many similar aluminium panels and pieces, discovering midway that a part is missing or that you assembled a stage out of order is exactly the delay this prevents.

No power drill, and do not force it

These are designed to go together by hand with the included hardware and picture instructions, and Paragon specifically note no power drill is needed. That is a feature, not a limitation, an impact driver is easy to over-torque on aluminium and can strip or dimple it. Use the included tools, hand-tighten as you align each stage, and only fully tighten once things are square. Aluminium rewards a gentle, deliberate touch over brute force.

Anchoring hardware is included for concrete, but decking needs your own bolts

A specific, easy-to-miss detail. Paragon include the anchoring hardware to fix the gazebo to a concrete surface, but attaching it to a wood deck requires additional screws or bolts that are not included. So confirm your surface before the build day, and if you are mounting to decking, have suitable lag bolts on hand. Either way, anchoring is essential, an open-sided gazebo with a solid roof catches wind, and the warranty excludes weather damage.

It is year-round, but clear heavy snow from the roof

The aluminium hardtop is built for all four seasons with a 65 mph wind rating, but its snow-load rating is a modest eight pounds per square foot, so in snowy climates clear the roof after heavy accumulation rather than letting it pile up. This is normal for a hardtop of this type, and a few minutes with a roof rake after a big storm protects both the roof and the warranty, which does not cover weather-inflicted damage.

Plan to move the heavy boxes yourself

A logistics point people underestimate. Paragon ships by freight with threshold delivery, meaning the boxes are left in the first dry area, your garage or just inside the front door, not carried to your backyard, and assembly is not included. The cartons are heavy, so plan how you will move them to the build site and have a second person and a flat staging area ready. Sorting this out in advance saves wrestling awkward freight on build day.

Peel the protective film and build square

The aluminium panels arrive with a protective film to prevent transit scratches, so peel it off each piece as you fit it for a clean finish. And because a hardtop only looks and performs its best when true, take care to keep the posts plumb and the frame square as you go, checking with a level, so the roof seats correctly and the optional screens or curtains, if you add them, hang and slide properly.

Before you build

Read the full illustrated manual and inventory every part first, as Paragon advise.

Confirm your surface: concrete anchoring hardware is included, but decking needs your own bolts.

Plan how you will move the heavy freight boxes from the delivery point to the site.

Set aside about five hours and a second person, with hand tools only.

And choose a level spot, with a plan to clear heavy snow in winter climates.

Where an installer helps

By handling the methodical five-hour build efficiently, keeping the posts plumb and the frame square so the composite roof seats correctly.

By moving the heavy freight boxes from your garage to the site, which threshold delivery leaves to you.

By anchoring it correctly for your surface, sourcing deck bolts where the included concrete hardware does not apply.

And by getting the finish right, film peeled, panels unmarked, screens and curtains hung true. It is a premium gazebo that DIYers can build, so help is most valuable for a flawless, properly anchored result without giving up a whole day.

What an installer does

  • Reads the manual, inventories the parts, and stages the build.
  • Moves the heavy freight boxes from the delivery point to the site.
  • Assembles the aluminium frame and composite roof square and plumb, by hand.
  • Anchors it to concrete with the included hardware, or to decking with the right bolts.
  • Peels the protective film and fits any optional screens or curtains.
  • Levels the structure and advises on clearing snow in winter.

Questions people ask

Do I need a power drill to assemble a Paragon gazebo?

No. Paragon design these to go together by hand with the included hardware and picture instructions, and specifically note no power drill is needed. In fact a power driver is easy to over-torque on aluminium, so hand tools are the right choice. Plan for two people and about five hours.

How long does it take?

Paragon recommend two assemblers and roughly five hours. It is a methodical build with many light aluminium roof panels, so the time goes into careful, ordered assembly rather than heavy lifting. Reading the whole manual and inventorying the parts first is the best way to keep it on schedule.

Is the anchoring hardware included?

For concrete, yes, Paragon include the bolts and anchoring materials to fix it to a concrete surface. For a wood deck, you need to supply additional screws or bolts yourself. Confirm your surface before build day, and either way anchor it, since a solid-roof gazebo catches wind.

Can it stay up all winter?

Yes, it is built for year-round use with a 65 mph wind rating, but its snow-load rating is about eight pounds per square foot, so clear the roof after heavy snowfall rather than letting it accumulate. The warranty does not cover weather-inflicted damage, so a roof rake after big storms is wise.

How is it delivered?

By freight with threshold delivery, which leaves the heavy boxes in the first dry area such as your garage or front door, not in your backyard, and does not include assembly. Plan how you will move the cartons to the build site, ideally with a second person, before delivery day.
