The mistake is a timing mistake, not a skill one
A Power Wheels vehicle goes together with a Phillips screwdriver and some patience: wheels, seat, steering wheel, decals, canopy or windshield depending on the model. An adult who is reasonably handy will be finished in around an hour. Nothing in the box is beyond anybody.
The battery is a different matter. What goes wrong, specifically
Charge first, build second, because Power Wheels says so

Only the correct charger and battery, with no substitutions
Use only a Power Wheels twelve volt charger with the 12V connector, taking 120 volts AC at 60 hertz in and delivering 12 volts DC out, and only a genuine Power Wheels twelve volt battery. Their manuals warn that using any other battery will damage the vehicle. This comes up years later when a battery finally dies and a cheaper generic looks equivalent, and it is worth knowing that the vehicle warranty runs one year while the battery warranty is only six months.
A sudden dead stop is usually the thermal fuse, not a failure
The battery has a built-in thermal fuse, which is a self-resetting safety device that trips and shuts the vehicle down if it is overloaded or the driving conditions are too severe. Two children on a one-seater, thick grass, a slope, or a stalled wheel against a step will all trigger it. If the vehicle stops dead and comes back to life later, that is the fuse working rather than the toy breaking. It is also a signal to look at how and where it is being driven.
Noises and swelling during charging are normal
Their manuals cover this specifically because it alarms people. The battery may make noise or swell slightly while charging, and the charger may or may not become warm, and in both cases the stated answer is that no action is required. Equally, a battery that makes no noise and does not swell is not necessarily failing to accept the charge. Judge it by whether the vehicle runs afterward, not by what the battery does on the bench.
Check under the seat before you panic about missing parts
Power Wheels notes that some parts are packed under the seat for shipment, which is exactly where nobody looks at half past eleven at night. Their manuals also ask you to identify all parts before starting and to keep all packaging until assembly is complete, since small fasteners routinely end up in the foam or the cardboard. If something genuinely is missing, their consumer line can help rather than the vehicle going back to the store.
The high speed is locked out, and that is deliberate
Vehicles with two forward speeds ship pre-set at the factory to run only in low, held there by a speed lock-out screw that the adult removes when the child is ready. It is worth knowing the setting exists, both so you do not think the vehicle is underpowered and so you can choose when to unlock it. Their guidance is also to use these only on generally level ground and gentle slopes of ten degrees or less, and to teach the child to come to a stop before switching between forward and reverse, which protects the motors and gears.
