A Rad Power ebike arrives largely assembled, and the work left to do is concentrated in the places that matter most: the front wheel, the stem and handlebar, the pedals, the headlight and fender. It is not a long job. It is a job where the consequences of getting something slightly wrong are carried at twenty miles an hour by a bike heavy enough that you cannot simply put a foot down and stop.
The step nobody anticipates comes first. To fit the carton, Rad ships the front fork rotated so it faces backward, and their manual tells you to turn it around before anything else happens. A fork left reversed puts the rake the wrong way, which changes the steering geometry completely, and because the bike still bolts together and still rolls, it is entirely possible to finish the build without realizing. Their check for it is a good one: with the fork correct, the brake caliper sits on the rider’s left, the non-drivetrain side without the chain, and the cables are not wound around the headtube.
The rest of the build is governed by a published torque table. Rad lists values for the stem clamp bolts, the stem faceplate, the brake lever clamps, the shifter, and the brake caliper hardware, and they recommend a torque wrench spanning roughly three to sixty newton meters. On a bicycle that a child rides to the end of the street, torque is good practice. On a motor-assisted bike carrying an adult and cargo at speed, it is the specification.

What to get right, specifically
Turn the fork around, and confirm it with the brake caliper
The fork ships facing backward so the bike fits its box, and Rad tells you to rotate it forward. The reason to take this seriously is that a reversed fork does not announce itself. The bike assembles, the wheel goes in, it rolls across the garage, and the steering geometry is wrong in a way that is unsettling at low speed and dangerous at speed. Use their check rather than your judgment: with the fork correct, the brake caliper is on the rider’s left, which is the side without the chain. Look at the cables at the same time and make sure they are not twisted around the headtube.
The torque values are a specification, not a suggestion
Rad publishes a table of recommended torque values covering the stem clamp bolts, the stem faceplate, brake lever clamps, the shifter clamp and the brake caliper hardware, and they recommend a torque wrench covering roughly three to sixty newton meters with Allen bits. Their warning is direct: do not operate the bike without ensuring the stem is secured to the headset and handlebar and all bolts are torqued to the listed values. Under-tightened and the handlebar can rotate in your hands under load; over-tightened and you can crush or crack a clamp. A torque wrench is the cheapest part of this purchase.
Tighten the stem faceplate evenly, in an X pattern
This is a specific procedure and it is worth following exactly. Thread all four faceplate bolts in by hand first, then tighten them evenly working in an X pattern rather than going around the square, and check that the gap between the faceplate and the stem is even top and bottom when you are done. An uneven gap means the bar is clamped crookedly, which concentrates load on part of the clamp. Rad notes that the same procedure applies later if you change the handlebar angle, which people often do after a few rides.
Do the twist test and the headset check before riding
Rad names both. The handlebar twist test confirms the front wheel and the stem are securely connected to each other, which is exactly the failure that puts you on the ground. The headset check is done by placing a hand over the point where the stem meets the headtube, squeezing the front brake lever, and rocking the bike gently front to back while feeling for play. Both take under a minute and both catch a problem that is invisible standing still.
Respect the minimum insertion marks
Rad flag this as a danger rather than a caution. Overextending the handlebar stem, seatpost or seat beyond the minimum insertion markings etched into them can cause those components to break or fall off the bike, with a very high risk of serious injury or death. It comes up constantly because a tall rider raises the seatpost until it feels right rather than until the mark says stop. If the bike will not fit at the marks, the answer is a different frame size or a longer seatpost, not another inch.
Check both wheels now and before every ride
Their wording is blunt: an improperly secured front or rear wheel can cause loss of control, accidents, serious injury or death, and either wheel can become loose with normal use. So this is not only an assembly check, it is a habit. A quick-release skewer that felt firm on day one can be loose in a month, and on a heavy bike with disc brakes the forces going through the axle are considerably higher than on the bike most people learned to ride on.
Know where Rad itself draw the line
Their manual says that if you cannot ensure every assembly step is performed properly, or cannot view their assembly video, you should consult a certified and reputable local bike mechanic as well as contacting Rad. That is a manufacturer telling you when to stop, and it is worth taking at face value. It is also a reasonable reading of the situation: this is a fast, heavy vehicle assembled at home by whoever opened the box.
Before you start
Check the contents against the list, including the front quick-release skewer, which is hidden inside the fork protector plate rather than loose in the box.
Gather what Rad recommends but do not supply: a torque wrench with Allen bits, a fifteen millimeter pedal wrench, a pump with a gauge, grease, and a strong friend.
Watch the assembly video for your specific model, since the stem and fork arrangements differ across the range.
Clear space to work around the whole bike, because the fork rotation and wheel install both need access from both sides.
Plan to charge the battery fully before the first real ride, and read the safety checklist while it charges.

Who this is really for
Somebody buying a capable, heavy, motor-assisted bike direct rather than from a shop, which is most of this market now. Rad builds good bikes and their documentation is genuinely better than most, including published torque values and named safety tests that many brands leave out entirely.
The reason to take the build seriously is the physics rather than the difficulty. These bikes are heavy, they carry cargo and passengers on some models, and they hold twenty miles an hour without effort. The same loose stem that would be a wobble on a hybrid is a different event here.
It is a sensible job to hand to a bike mechanic or an installer if you do not own a torque wrench, if the fork rotation and headset adjustment are unfamiliar territory, or if the bike is for somebody who will not be checking their own wheels before every ride. Rad says much the same thing itself in the manual.

Why is the front fork facing backward?
