There are three weight figures in this purchase: the crossbar, the rack system, and the load limit your car manufacturer set for the roof. They are rarely the same, and the one that governs is always the smallest.
Fit and capacity are both per-vehicle, and neither is on the box
A Thule roof rack is three things rather than one: load bars, the feet or towers that hold them, and a fit kit specific to your vehicle. That is why Thule’s fit guide asks for year, make, model and trim rather than just the size of your car. Roofs differ fundamentally, and a bare roof, raised rails, flush rails, fixed mounting points and factory crossbars each need a different attachment method. Small year-to-year or trim changes can require entirely different components.
Capacity works the same way, and this is where people come unstuck. Thule states that their roof racks are designed to carry up to 75 kilograms, around 165 pounds. Individual crossbars are often rated higher, sometimes around 220 pounds. And separately from both, your vehicle manufacturer sets a maximum roof load, which is frequently the lowest figure of the three and which appears in the car’s owner manual rather than in anything that came with the rack.
So the number that governs what you can actually carry is the smallest of those three, and it is the one nobody reads. A specialist retailer makes the point directly: the fact that a bar is rated for 220 pounds does not mean the vehicle can safely carry that much on its roof. Load to the bar rating and you may be well over what the car was designed for, with the weight sitting at the highest point of the vehicle.

If the parts are correct, the fitting is straightforward. Almost every bad outcome here starts with the wrong fit kit or the wrong weight assumption.
What to get right, specifically
Find your vehicle’s roof load limit, not just the rack’s
The car manufacturer sets a maximum roof load and it is usually in the owner manual. Thule states their racks are designed to carry up to 75 kilograms, and crossbars are sometimes rated higher again, but none of that overrides what your car is rated for. Work out all three numbers and plan around the lowest. Remember also that the rack itself is part of the load, so the weight you can put on top is the roof limit minus the weight of the rack and any carrier.
Use the fit guide, and enter the trim correctly
Roof racks are not universal, and Thule’s fit guide exists because roof types vary so much. A bare roof, raised rails, flush rails, fixed points and factory crossbars all need different feet and fit kits. Vehicles that look identical can differ between years or trims in ways that change the parts required. Entering your vehicle accurately is not a formality, it is the whole basis of the recommendation, and assuming universal fitment is the single most common reason people end up with hardware that does not attach properly.
Do not mix components across brands or product lines
It is tempting when you have old feet from a previous car, or bars from another brand that look like they would work. Thule does not recommend mixing components across product lines unless their installation manuals explicitly say it is supported, and mixing brands is worse. These systems are engineered as matched sets, and the interfaces between bar, foot and fit kit are exactly where a load transfers into the roof.
Check crossbar spread against the carrier, not just the car
The distance between the front and rear bars is a vehicle-specific figure, and it matters as much as fitment. Cargo boxes, bike mounts and kayak carriers each have their own minimum and maximum spread requirements. A rack that fits your car perfectly may still be spaced wrong for the box you intend to put on it. Check the rack and the carrier together before buying either, rather than discovering the mismatch with both in your garage.
Clean the contact points before anything is tightened
Grip and seal integrity depend on clean surfaces. Grit trapped under a foot pad or a clamp will grind into the paint or the rail every time the car moves, and a dirty contact point does not seat evenly. Clean the roof, the rails or the mounting points before fitting, and check them again whenever the rack comes off and goes back on, which is also the moment to look for any paint damage starting.
Tighten evenly, then re-check after the first drive
Tighten progressively and alternate between sides rather than fully torquing one corner at a time, so the pressure is even and the bar is not pulled out of alignment. Then drive it and check everything again. Components settle, clamps bed in, and the first drive is when anything that was not quite right announces itself. After that, re-check periodically, and always before a long trip with a loaded rack.
Remember what a loaded roof changes about the car
Weight on the roof sits above the vehicle’s center of gravity and changes how it behaves, particularly in crosswinds and on quick direction changes. It also increases drag and fuel consumption, and it changes your overall height, which matters for garages, drive-throughs and low barriers. None of that is a reason not to fit a rack, but it is worth adjusting your driving and your route awareness while it is loaded.

And it is worth a conversation rather than a purchase if you are planning to carry anything heavy. The limiting number is your roof, not the rack, and finding that out before you buy a large cargo box is considerably better than finding it out afterward.
