Zinus assembly
A mattress that expands for a day, and a steel frame that wants re-tightening later.
Zinus is bed-in-a-box: a vacuum-compressed foam mattress and a bolt-together frame, both shipped flat. There is barely any assembly in the flat-pack sense, but there are two things worth knowing, that the mattress needs unboxing promptly and then hours to reach full loft, and that a steel frame which squeaks later almost always just needs its bolts going round again.
Not really flat-pack, more unpacking and waiting
Zinus sells almost entirely online, which shapes the product: a foam mattress compressed and rolled into a tube, and a bed frame of steel or steel-and-wood that bolts together. Neither involves the particleboard, cam locks and panel-orientation puzzles of a chest of drawers, so if you have assembled flat-pack furniture before, this is a different and generally easier job.
The two things that catch people out are both about time rather than difficulty. A compressed mattress should be unboxed reasonably soon after delivery, because foam left compressed for a long period can be affected permanently, and once unrolled it needs hours to reach its proper shape. Most of the loft comes back quickly, but full expansion commonly takes a day or more, and a mattress judged on its first hour will feel wrong.
The other is the frame. Steel frames are quick to bolt together and then settle under weight over the following days, which is where the squeak that people complain about comes from. It is not a fault, and it is fixed by going round the bolts again once the bed has been slept in a few times.

Plan to sleep on it the same night if you must, most of the loft returns quickly, but judge the mattress after a couple of days rather than the first evening.
What to know
Unbox it promptly, and cut only the outer plastic
Foam is not meant to stay compressed indefinitely, so unroll the mattress within a reasonable time of delivery rather than leaving the box in a spare room for months. When opening it, cut the outer wrapping carefully and keep the blade shallow: the inner layer sits directly against the mattress cover, and a blade that goes too deep leaves a cut in the cover that cannot be undone. Get it onto the frame before removing the final layer, because a mattress expands quickly once released and is much harder to move afterwards.
Give it a day before judging it
Most of the loft returns within the first few hours, but full expansion commonly takes somewhere between one and three days, and a mattress that still has a dip where it was folded on the first evening is usually just not finished. There is also typically a smell when it is first opened, which is normal for new foam and fades with airflow. Opening a window or leaving the room ventilated for a few hours deals with most of it.
The box is heavy for its size, and stairs are the real problem
A compressed queen commonly weighs between sixty and ninety pounds in a tube shape with nothing good to grip, which is a genuinely awkward carry. Most of the complaints about these products are really about getting the box from the front door to an upstairs bedroom. Two people and a plan beats improvising on a stair turn, and it is worth deciding in advance which room it is going to before the delivery arrives rather than after.
Squeaking means the bolts want re-tightening
A steel frame is bolted, and it settles under weight during the first week or two of use, which loosens things slightly and produces the squeak people assume is a defect. Going round every bolt once after a couple of weeks, and again a few months later, fixes it. If a squeak persists, the usual culprits are metal-to-metal contact at a joint or a slat sitting slightly proud, both of which are easy to spot once you look with the mattress off.
Slat spacing matters for foam
A foam mattress needs a supporting surface with slats close enough together, and Zinus frames are designed with that in mind. If you are putting a Zinus mattress on a different bed, particularly an older frame with widely spaced slats, the foam can sag between them, which affects both comfort and, in many cases, the warranty. It is worth checking the spacing requirement before pairing a boxed mattress with a frame it did not come with.
Before the pro arrives
Decide which room the bed is going in and clear it, including taking out any old bed or frame beforehand. Removal of the old mattress is worth arranging separately if you need it, since it is bulky and not always something an assembler can take away.
Have the boxes as close to the room as you can manage. The mattress box in particular is heavy and awkward on stairs, and getting it up is often the longest part of the job.
If the mattress is going on a frame you already own rather than a Zinus one, check the slat spacing first, because foam needs closer support than a sprung mattress does.
